How to install metal roofing

Installing metal roofing can be a rewarding DIY project if approached with proper planning, tools, and safety measures. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get started:

Tools and Materials Needed

  • Tools: Ladder, tape measure, metal snips, power drill, chalk line, screw gun, safety harness, and gloves.
  • Materials: Metal panels, screws with washers, underlayment, flashing, and ridge caps.

Step 1: Prepare the Roof

  1. Remove Existing Roofing: Strip off old shingles or roofing material to create a clean surface.
  2. Inspect for Damage: Check the roof deck for any rotted or damaged areas and repair as needed.
  3. Install Underlayment: Roll out the underlayment across the roof deck, securing it with nails or staples. Overlap edges by at least 4 inches for water resistance.

Step 2: Measure and Cut Panels

  1. Measure the roof area carefully and cut metal panels to fit, ensuring they’re slightly longer to allow overhang.
  2. Use metal snips or a power saw with a metal cutting blade for precise cuts.

Step 3: Install Flashing

  1. Apply flashing around edges, chimneys, and vents to prevent water leakage.
  2. Secure it with roofing nails or screws.

Step 4: Lay the Metal Panels

  1. Start from one side of the roof, working your way across.
  2. Place the first panel square to the roofline, with the overhang extending about 1 inch beyond the edge.
  3. Secure the panel with screws spaced every 12-18 inches along the ridges. Use screws with rubber washers to prevent leaks.
  4. Overlap the next panel over the previous one, ensuring a snug fit.

Step 5: Add Ridge Caps

  1. Position ridge caps along the roof peak to cover panel seams.
  2. Secure them with screws, ensuring a tight seal against weather.

Step 6: Inspect and Seal

  1. Double-check for loose screws or gaps.
  2. Apply sealant around flashing and other vulnerable areas to prevent water infiltration.
