The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) is offering 400 real estate management employees, previously dismissed during the Trump administration’s efficiency initiative, the chance to return to their positions, according to Federal News Network and the Associated Press.
At the same time, 126 other employees at the agency’s Public Buildings Service will be officially terminated.
A GSA official confirmed that these workers had been warned about possible dismissal and the agency is now moving forward with the action.
The affected employees negotiate leases, oversee renovations, and manage property transactions on behalf of the federal government. A GSA spokesperson said the agency is “making adjustments” to its workforce but did not confirm specific numbers.
Federal employee terminations had slowed following the departure of former Trump adviser Elon Musk from the Department of Government Efficiency in May.
The ongoing 126 firings mark a rare continuation of the workforce shake-up even after Musk’s exit. Meanwhile, the administration is reversing some of the prior changes implemented under Musk’s direction.
In addition, the GSA plans to form a new team to help agencies consolidate and relocate offices, according to a letter from acting PBS commissioner Andrew Heller reviewed by Reuters.
This aligns with President Trump’s campaign pledge to relocate tens of thousands of federal employees out of the Washington, D.C., area.
Currently, over 80% of federal employees already work outside the D.C. region, according to the Office of Personnel Management.
